If you're out of work, chances are you've had all kinds of time to hone your job-seeking skills.

But guess what? It doesn't do any good if there aren't any jobs.

So think about creating an opportunity for yourself by starting your own business.

Have a business idea? Contact David Mace at dmace@butlercc.edu to find out how the Kansas Small Business Development Center can help. We're also on facebook.

What is a pink slip party?

A pink slip party is a place where recently displaced workers can come to:

  • Mingle with other laid-off professionals
  • Learn about self-employment opportunities or YOBs (your own business)
  • Meet recruiters
  • Exchange tips and war stories
  • Start a new professional stage

The parties have seen great success in places like New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Kansas City.

Sometimes there is a fee. Other times, the party is free of charge. (Ours is free, but you can buy drinks at the bar.)

Pink Slip Party May 20 at the Pumphouse

Tired? Stunned? Confused? Losing your job can leave you feeling down on yourself and down on the professional world.

That's why we thought you might want to come to a party from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday May 20 at the Pumphouse in Old Town to join your fellow situation-seekers for a Pink Slip Party.

We promise it will be very informal, but we'll have plenty of resources on hand to talk with you, including:

  • Business Opportunities to "hire yourself"
  • The Arnold Group
  • Manpower
  • Maverick Creative Group: start-up business strategist
  • Altura Group: start-up business strategist
  • John Madden
  • Damon Isaacs

We know that at this point, you might not be exclusively looking for a job. You might be considering starting your own thing. That's why Maverick Creative Group and Altura Group are there: to consult with you about your business idea. And if you think a home-based business is your deal, then you can talk with representatives from that industry.

Representatives from the Arnold Group and Manpower will be there, as well, to answer questions about the area job situation. And John Madden and Damon Isaacs will be on hand to keep the party rolling.

Join us on the 20th for the first ICT Pink Slip Party. See you at the Pumphouse!
