Small Business Resources

If you're out of work, chances are you've had all kinds of time to hone your job-seeking skills.

But guess what? It doesn't do any good if there aren't any jobs.

So think about creating an opportunity for yourself by starting your own business.

Have a business idea? Contact David Mace at maverick@letmaverick.com

What is a pink slip party?

A pink slip party is a place where recently displaced workers can come to:

  • Mingle with other laid-off professionals
  • Learn about self-employment opportunities or YOBs (your own business)
  • Meet recruiters
  • Exchange tips and war stories
  • Start a new professional stage

The parties have seen great success in places like New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Kansas City.

Sometimes there is a fee. Other times, the party is free of charge. (Ours is free, but you can buy drinks at the bar.)

Pink Slip Observations: Tell us what you think

The dust hasn't quite settled and the buzz is still going, but we are thinking ahead to our next ICT Pink Slip Party. We hope you'll be there.

If there is one common theme that kept coming up last night and today, it was "What a great idea!"

We can't take all the credit because pink slip parties have been happening all over the country for quite awhile now.

But we're pretty sure we're the only one that offers the opportunity not only to be hired but also to hire yourself. In the current economy, starting your own business can provide supplemental income or even launch a new career.

As for last night, we have to send a special shout out to our hosts at the Pumphouse. Most of all, though, we salute those who have been pink-slipped. We want to put Wichita back to work by putting you back in the saddle. See you soon.

It was great to see everyone last night. As usual, John Madden introduced me to several new people, and I was able to make some great connections. I found business opportunities I'd never thought of before. Plus, any excuse to hit the Pumphouse is cool with me.
